Angèle Etoundi Essamba quitte le Cameroun en 1972 à l’âge de 10 ans pour la France où elle réside jusqu’à la fin de ses études secondaires. Après son baccalauréat, elle part s’installer à Amsterdam aux Pays-Bas. Elle s’initie à la photographie dès 1984 en suivant une formation à la Nederlandse Fotovakschool (école professionnelle néerlandaise de la photographie).
Les divers milieux culturels dans lesquels Angèle Etoundi Essamba a grandi ont considérablement influencé sa vision d’un monde où elle puise une inspiration principalement dominée par son héritage africain.
La photographie d’Angèle Etoundi Essamba associe la grâce des lignes stylisées et celle du corps à la force de la composition qui repose généralement sur de vigoureux contrastes. L’altérité, l’identité, la dualité, la modernité, la tradition sont ses sujets de prédilection. L’être humain, et principalement la Femme, reste dans son travail l’élément central.
Dans ce travail, Voiles et Dévoilements, l’artiste se découvre fascinée par la couleur qu’elle aborde pour la première fois et dont elle a vécu la découverte comme une aventure passionnante.
Cette série, présentée en partie seulement dans cette exposition, avait déjà été présentée dans son intégralité à l’occasion d’une exposition monographique au centre d’art en 2008.
Angèle Etoundi Essamba left Cameroon in 1972 at the age of 10 for France where she lived until the end of her secondary studies. After her baccalaureate, she moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She was introduced to photography in 1984 by training at the Nederlandse Fotovakschool (Dutch professional school of photography).
The diverse cultural backgrounds in which Angèle Etoundi Essamba grew up greatly influenced her vision of a world where she draws inspiration mainly dominated by her African heritage.
Angèle Etoundi Essamba’s photography combines the grace of stylized lines and that of the body with the strength of the composition, which is generally based on vigorous contrasts. Otherness, identity, duality, modernity, tradition are her favorite subjects. The human being, and especially the Woman, remains the central element in her work.
In this work, Voiles et Dévoilements, the artist finds herself fascinated by the color that she approaches for the first time and the discovery of which she experienced as a fascinating adventure.
This series, shown only in part for this exhibition in the gallery, had already been shown in its entirety during a monographic exhibition at the art center in 2008.
